Drupal added the matchMedia asset library to core as a polyfill for browsers that did not support matchMedia and MediaQueryList to test media queries in JavaScript.

All of the browsers listed in Drupal's browser support policy support matchMedia so this asset library is deprecated in Drupal 8.8 and will be removed in Drupal 9.
